The 5 Best Boat Routes from l'Escala: Discover the Treasures of the Costa Brava
The Costa Brava hides a magic that is only truly revealed when you look at it from the sea. At Nàutica Brava, we know it well, our home port in l’Escala is the perfect gateway to a unique coastline, strategically located between the Cap de Creus Natural Park to the north and the Medes Islands Natural Park or the coves of Begur to the south.
Whether it’s for a quick half-day getaway, a full day of sun and sea, or even the unique experience of sleeping on board our sailboat, l’Escala opens up a world of endless possibilities.
Want to know which spots you shouldn't miss? We’ve selected the 5 best nautical routes for you to enjoy this summer like never before.
Get your sunscreen ready, choose your experience, and let’s set sail!
1. Medes Islands and the Montgrí Coast: A snorkeler's paradise
This is the ideal route for those who want to experience the pleasure of sailing for the first time. Heading south from l'Escala, we will sail along the towering cliffs of the Montgrí massif, a limestone landscape hiding secrets like the Roca Foradada. The experience culminates at the Medes Islands, where you can enjoy a swim and snorkel in one of the Mediterranean's richest marine reserves. Seeing the seabed teeming with life from our sailboat is a memory you will never forget.
2. Cadaqués and Portlligat: Dalí’s Dreame
Sailing north from l’Escala is like taking a trip back in time. Arriving at Cadaqués bay on board a sailboat is, quite simply, the best way to enter this iconic white village. You will feel the peace of silent sailing as you approach the coastline that inspired Salvador Dalí. After a refreshing swim, we will continue to Portlligat bay to get a close-up view of the surrealist genius's house from the water. This is a full-day route designed for those seeking beauty, art, and a deep connection with the sea.
3. Cap de Creus: The end of the world
If you are looking for a wilder and more authentic experience, this is your route. Past Cadaqués, the landscape becomes geologically fascinating, with rocks sculpted by the Tramuntana wind creating almost lunar shapes. Cap de Creus offers hidden coves and crystal-clear waters, such as Cala Jugadora or Cala Culip. It is the ideal place to drop anchor, relax on the sailboat's deck, and disconnect from the outside world in a completely protected and pristine environment.
4. Begur and the Baix Empordà Coves
Heading south, beyond l'Estartit, we will find the gentler and greener side of the Costa Brava. The Begur coast stands out for its pine trees that reach the water's edge and the fine sand of its beaches. Dropping anchor in Sa Riera bay or in front of the picturesque Sa Tuna is a treat for the senses. Sailing with our sailboat through these blue waters is synonymous with comfort, elegance, and that Mediterranean lifestyle we love so much.
5. Empúries and Sea Caves: History beneath the keel
You don't need to sail many miles to discover surprising spots. Right next to home, we can sail past the Ruins of Empúries, feeling the weight of history as the sailboat glides over the water. Following the l'Escala coastline to the south, we will explore the sea caves carved into the rock by nature, such as the Foradada. It is a perfect half-day trip, safe and very scenic, ideal for enjoying sailing at a relaxed pace.
